Five-Axis Tool Grinding

The machine that decides whether a complex geometry is possible. Five simultaneous axes, so the flute form and the profile come off in one setup.

A five-axis tool grinder moves the wheel and the workpiece on five axes at once. That is what allows a variable helix, an unequal flute spacing or a form ground into the flute to be produced in a single setup rather than a sequence of fixtures that accumulate error.

Machines in the grinding cell

  • SAACKE UWIF — five-axis tool grinding, used for complex geometries and small batch work.
  • WALTER HELITRONIC — precision profile grinding, used where the profile tolerance has to hold across a batch.

What it means for your order

  • Non-standard geometry is routine, not special. A profile that a three-axis machine cannot produce is a normal job here.
  • Batch consistency. One setup per tool means the tenth tool is ground from the same kinematics as the first.
  • Short runs are viable. Setup time is low enough that ten tools is a reasonable order, not a minimum we tolerate.
Ask for the measurement report. Every form tool leaves with the inspection data for that batch, so you can see what was actually ground rather than what was promised.
